The era of the hand sanitizer

Where’s the dirt?

Once upon a time, before the era of hand sanitizers and surgical masks (as long ago as 2019) doctors, and even the general public, believed that exposure to a wide range of bacteria was a good thing. There was even a name for this, the hygiene hypothesis. Exposure to dirt was seen as beneficial to create a strong immune system. Studies showed that children who lived on farms were healthier than their urban and suburban counterparts because of their exposure to farm animals and bacteria. Studies even suggested that washing dishes by hand was healthier than using an automatic dishwasher because more bacteria would persist on the dishes. Doctors discouraged the use of hand sanitizers and disinfectants. No more.

In our zeal to avoid exposure to a virus we have forgotten the protective function of the microbiome. However, it is still true that a wide ranging inner ecology of different bacteria is in fact beneficial to immune function. How can we maintain the microbiome in this disinfecting age?

  • Expose your family to dirt. Go outside in nature, tend a garden, go on hikes, encourage your children to play in the dirt. Since there are no organized sports, get your kids out of the house, shooting baskets, throwing a baseball, playing tennis, riding a scooter or skateboard.

  • Eat fermented foods: pickles, sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchee.

  • Take probiotic supplements.

Fortify the immune system

Protection from a virus involves more than masks and social distancing. Keep your immune system strong and resilient.

  • Get exercise.

  • Get adequate sleep.

  • Avoid weight gain that contributes to inflammation which in turn weakens the immune system.

  • There are benefits to the immune system from staying home. Many people have experienced a reduction in work stress. There is much less commuting and therefore much less pollution. The world has slowed down. Kids are actually reading books.

  • Of course, this is not to minimize the toll that the virus has taken. Many people are suffering from the loss of income and the uncertainty of their economic survival. And people have unfortunately died as a result of the virus with the accompanying stress of family grief. All the more reason to keep your immune system strong. Anxiety and fear has a weakening effect on immune function.

  • Take supplements that keep the immune system strong. Vitamin D, vitamin C, medicinal mushrooms, astragalus
